Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being found guilty of first-degree murder.
25-year old Hernandez was also found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Hernandez was charged with killing 27-year old Odin Lloyd on June 17, 2013 when Lloyd was found shot to death in an abandoned industrial yard.
Lloyd was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée before he was killed.
135 witnesses including Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft were heard over the nine-week trial, and after 36 hours of deliberation, jurors decided on the guilty verdict Wednesday morning.
Lloyd’s mother Ursula Ward told the court that Odin was the first best gift she ever received. “I thank God every second and every day of my son’s life that I spent with him”
Hernandez had a $40 million contract with the New England Patriots.
